Sneaker Care Guide: Keep Your Trainers Fresh

Great trainers deserve to look great for longer. A few simple habits will keep your sneakers box-fresh, protect the materials and add months to their life. Here's our no-nonsense care guide.

Everyday habits

Rotate between two pairs so each gets time to dry out and recover its shape. Unlace and loosen before you take them off — yanking at the heel crushes the counter. Knock off fresh dirt with a dry brush before it works into the fabric.

Deep clean by material

Mesh & knit

Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush. Work in small circles, then wipe with a clean damp cloth. Never machine wash — it wrecks the glue and midsole.

Suede & nubuck

Keep it dry. Use a suede brush to lift dirt and a suede eraser for scuffs. Protect with a suede-specific spray before first wear.

Leather

Wipe with a damp cloth, then condition occasionally to stop cracking. A little leather balm keeps premium pairs looking rich.

Canvas

The most forgiving. A soft brush with soapy water handles most marks; rinse lightly and air dry.

Drying & storage

Stuff damp shoes with plain paper to hold their shape and absorb moisture, then dry at room temperature — never on a radiator or in direct sun, which warps soles and fades colours. Store on a shelf where air can circulate rather than sealed in a box.

Freshness & odour

Remove insoles to air after heavy wear. A sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda left overnight neutralises odour naturally. Cedar shoe trees are a premium touch that keep pairs dry and in shape.

Protect before you wear

The best clean is the one you never have to do. A quality water-and-stain repellent, applied to new trainers and topped up monthly, keeps dirt on the surface and off your shoes.
